Antique US SPRINGFIELD .50-70 Govt TRAPDOOR Rifle CIVIL WAR Infantry Rifle-Musket Turn Breechloader
Description: Antique US SPRINGFIELD .50-70 Govt TRAPDOOR Rifle CIVIL WAR Infantry Rifle-Musket Turn Breechloader Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin Trapdoor Rifle in .50-70 GOVT. This was originally a rifled muzzle-loading musket made for the infantry during the American Civil War. After the Civil War, the United States had an enormous surplus inventory of Model 1861/1863 type muskets and, rather than surplus the entire lot of them, decided to convert many to breechloaders to increase rate of fire. Many different types of conversions were conceived and implemented. This one was chosen and named for its inventor, Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer for Springfield Armory. These conversions were the main infantry weapon of the West and played a large role in the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. 25,000 Model 1863s received the Allin Conversion, enabling them to be loaded via the breach through a “trapdoor” mechanism. The rear of the lock is dated “1864” and the front of the lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The breech is dated “1866” and marked “EAGLE/US”. The barrel is unit marked "61.C.R" with a "US" marked socket bayonet with the original scabbard and frog. The overall condition is very good. The stock has seen much use and remains solid aside from a short repair on the left stock flat. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The action remains strong and crisp. This one is really neat with its multilayered histories! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 36-3/4 inches. Caliber: .50-70 GOVT Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $2100 #190044 SOLD Antique: Yes |
