Description: c1875 CUSTER RANGE SPRINGFIELD Model 1873 TRAPDOOR CAVALRY Carbine Antique SADDLE RING CARBINE In the Original 45-70 GOVT Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine in the Custer Range of numbers, made circa 1873 by the Springfield Armory. This example would have been manufactured a couple years prior to the Battle of the Little Big Horn (aka Battle of the Greasy Grass; June 1876) in Montana where Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his men suffered their crushing defeat at the hands of the Lakota and Cheyenne with Custer and much of the 7th Cavalry destroyed, including Custer’s brothers, Boston & Thomas, his brother-in-law, and his nephew. This Model 1873 carbine’s serial number lands in the pre-1876 serial range. The Model 1873 was the first trapdoor variant to be made in the .45-70 GOVT cartridge as opposed to the .50-70 GOVT cartridge of previous rifles by Springfield Armory. Early features this carbine includes are the flush barrel-to-receiver fit and the lack of proofs on the left side of the barrel (this would begin shortly after this carbine was made). The overall condition is good+. Gray patina throughout. Strong action. The bore is bright and reflective! Solid walnut stock with expected wear. This is a later stock that has replaced the old and it does have the cleaning rod trap in the butt stock, under the early 1873-correct butt-plate. There is a tiny sliver on either side of the forestock in front of the barrel band. The left of the stock has a retraced cartouche. The circle “P” mark on the bottom of the stock is present. The breech and lock are stamped “1873”. A great opportunity to own a gun from this epic period of American history. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
