CUSTER ERA UNALTERED FIRST MODEL 1873 CARBINE, .45-70, #12XXX, MADE 1874

Description:
RARE CUSTER ERA UNALTERED FIRST MODEL 1873 CARBINE, .45-70, #12XXX, MADE 1874, (note: there is a known Custer Battle carbine with a serial number less than 200 numbers from this one), has the correct long wrist/short comb stock, coarse knurled hammer, high arch breech block with earliest markings, 1873 dated lock plate, first model carbine rear sight with slotless screws, correct stacking swivel on the barrel band etc., almost all of these early carbines were recalled and updated by the arsenals with surviving examples in original condition extremely rare, those that do exist were most likely lost in battle to Indians or stolen- fully a third of cavalry in the early 1870s deserted for the gold fields- life for the cavalry soldier was not easy in the West and the newly discovered gold in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory was a strong temptation! Stock shows honest sling ring wear and shows a few "rows of dots" left when a spur ran along the stock while it was in a saddle scabbard, wood is weathered and has the usual age and stress cracks along the wrist with some old frontier tack repairs from the top- exactly why the wrist was shortened and thickened beginning in 1877- still retains a faint circle P cartouche behind the lower tang, nice uncleaned age blue on the barrel that has some light surface freckling still on it- never been cleaned, gray brown trigger guard and butt plate, deep aged plum hammer and lock plate, near exc. bore shows some wear but is surprisingly bright, has the number 148 stamped in the wood ahead of the butt plate with a couple of small letters ahead of it and the small number 042 stamped ahead of the trigger guard- probably rack numbers, overall an uncleaned "attic condition" example with, no doubt, a rich history!
