INDIAN WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD 1873 TRAPDOOR Rifle First Trapdoor in the Original .45-70 GOVT!
INDIAN WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD 1873 TRAPDOOR Rifle
First Trapdoor in the Original .45-70 GOVT!
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1874 by Springfield Armory. This model was manufactured between 1873 and 1877 during the height of the Indian Wars. This rifle would have been in the hands of the infantry led by Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn (aka the Battle of Greasy Grass). Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
The breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873/eagle head/cross arrows/US". The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873". The bottom of the stock is marked with the circle “P” and the left side of the stock bears remnants of the inspector cartouche. The rack number “19” is stamped in large numerals on the bottom of the butt stock.
The overall condition is very good. The stock bears the requisite handling marks of an issued infantry rifle and remains solid. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The action remains in excellent condition.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 32-5/8 inches.
Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
Overall condition as seen in photos.
