Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine by Springfield
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, made circa 1881 by Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. Production was approximately 15,000. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This Trapdoor Saddle Ring carbine features a cleaning rod trap in the butt stock. The serial number corresponds to the Model 1879, however, it appears that it went back to the armory at some point to have a new breech block and rear sight installed. The lock is marked “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The trapdoor is marked “U.S./MODEL/1884”.
The overall condition is very good. The original finish is about 50%. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape. The bore is in very good condition, clean with nice rifling. The action on this carbine is excellent. Here is a nice example of a historical US carbine!
