INDIAN WARS ANTIQUE US Springfield Armory Trapdoor
Description:
INDIAN WARS ANTIQUE US Springfield Armory Trapdoor
Large Bore, Single Shot, Long Range Rifle in 45-70 GOVT
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1889 by Springfield Armory. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War in 1898. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. They were sturdy, simple rifles, with plenty of range and power.
This piece has been shortened for hunting or shooting recreationally. Some parts have been touched up. The markings are legible. The stock has been shortened and remains solid. The bore is shiny bright and well-rifled. The action is excellent.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 25-3/8 inches.
Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
Overall condition as seen in photos.
