John Wayne The Alamo 1960 Movie Prop M1873 Trapdoor Blank Firing 45-70
Description: Serial #174548, .45-70, 32 inch barrel with a fine bore having good rifling and scattered roughness. This is a Hollywood move prop gun built on a Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle and fitted with bright brass fittings and replica lock to appear as a flintlock but still fire blank cartridges. These were prominent in Glen Ford's The Man from the Alamo (1953), & John Wayne's The Alamo (1960). Included with this rifle are two still photos from those movies where these modified trapdoors can be seen. This example has a stable five inch repaired crack on the left side of the wrist and a large chunk of stock missing from the right side between the rear & middle barrel bands. The metal has a old re-blue and is good overall with focused wear at the muzzle & sides of receiver. The rear sight has been removed. Well marked the top of the breech block reads 'U.S.', 'MODEL', '1873' with the eagle and "SPRINGFIELD" marks on the side plate. The hammer does not lock back and the ramrod is not easily removed. A great piece of Hollywood movie history. Antique SOLD Antique: Yes |
