Nice SPRINGFIELD Model 1884 TRAPDOOR CADET Rifle
Chambered in the Original 45-70 GOVT
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle, made by the Springfield Armory. Manufactured in 1885 during the height of the Indian War and not long after the Custer massacre, this is a cadet rifle version of the U.S. Springfield Model 1884. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This one has the slightly abbreviated barrel of the “cadet” rifle, which were rifles made for use at West Point for drilling and training in marksmanship. This would have been taken out of service at the academy and put into regular service with the simple addition of sling swivels.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 29-5/8 inches.
Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
Overall condition as seen in photos.
