PRICE REDUCED The Model 1886 XC carbine was the Army's second attempt at developing an arm for infantry, artillery and cavalry use. Approximately 1,000 guns were made for trial. Again, the troops did not find the arms significantly better than the ones on hand and interest in them quickly dwindled.
After the trials, the guns were returned and refurbished. In the 1890s, they were distributed to guard units throughout the US. A number of them were issued to units in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.
The Model 1886 XC carbine is a full stocked gun with a 24" barrel. The arm has only one barrel band and the tip of the stock is not capped. The lower sling loop is located near the butt plate rather than on the trigger guard bow, and the rear sight is stamped "XC" on the base and ladder.
The bluing has patined to a dark plum color over most of the metal. The gun shows use but not abuse.The muzzle has a nicely rounded crown barrel with a single circular milling around the crown.
