Sporterized Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle
Description: U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle with period modifications made to the stock, converting it from a standard issue infantry rifle to a sporterized trapdoor hunting rifle. 32 5/8ths” barrel. The caliber is believed to be 45-70. This trapdoor rifle features an oil rubbed walnut (modified) stock with standard iron mountings, lockplate and low arched breech block. The lockplate is marked with an eagle symbol and the words U.S. Springfield. The breech is marked U.S. Model 1873. Barrel markings include the Letters VP, R, and P, along with an eagle symbol. The rifle is fit with the original sights including the rear adjustable ladder-type sight. Manufactured after 1876. The rifle is mechanically functioning. The two-click tumbler cocks and holds as intended. The catch on the breech is loose indicating wear from use. Cosmetically, the rifle is in okay condition. The barrel has acquired a brown patina consistent with age. The walnut stock has some wear and has been either modified, or replaced with one featuring a sporterized half-stock, pistol grip, shotgun buttplate configuration. The ramrod has been removed and is missing, as is 1 of the barrel bands. The hard rubber/ plastic pistol grip cap and buttplate are either original to the sporterized stock or taken from another rifle entirely. It appears the tang of the original trigger guard was modified to match the curve of the pistol grip. The serial number is pitted and illegible. The only enhancements made to the rifle are those mentioned above. It is unknown who made the modifications and when. The rifle does come with a Native American made brain tanned deer hide scabbard circa 1920. This may indicate the rifles use as a Native American weapon. The scabbard features hide fringe along with panels beaded with geometric designs in cobalt blue, red, white, and yellow seed beads. The condition of the scabbard is good with minor areas of bead loss to the beaded panels. Manufacturer: Springfield Model: Model 1873 Barrel Length: 32 5/8 Price: $1,350.00 Contact Seller |
