Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle Line Throwing Gun
Description: Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle Converted to a Line Throwing Gun, in wood case with accessories. Used by the Navy for saving lives, tethering and transfer of supplies, the .45-70 caliber trapdoor has a shortened barrel and long range sight. A canister attaches to the barrel that holds a spool of line that would be connected to a projectile that would be shot using .45-70 blanks from the smooth bore rifle. These were apparently used up to WWII. The metal canister is missing and two rolls of line are intact along with one wood pin. There is one sealed box of 20 Cartridges, Rifle and Carbine blank in .45-70 Gov. Caliber rounds. One box 20 Blank Cartridge is opened containing only 9 rounds. There are 4 brass line throwing pins. The Trapdoor Carbine is serial number 150458. The carbine has a nice black finish with crisp action and markings and a very nice wood stock. The wood case is stained outside and is marked “TUG LINDEN / LINE THROWING GUN” in stencil on top of lid of the wooden case.
