This 45-70
re-arsenaled Model 1881 Springfield Trapdoor has a tapered round 33” by 1/1/16” to 11/16” blued barrel with an adjustable
Type 1 rear sight.
Moderate metal finish wear is seen around the outside of the muzzle. The bore has scattered
light frosting throughout with sharp rifling remaining. The P grade Walnut stock is
mounted with blued iron furniture including the sling swivels and
as-issued metal cleaning rod.
No apparent
cracks in the stock – just old handling dents.
Just below the rear lock bolt is the stamped inspector’s cartouche that is dated
1881 and
below the trigger guard bears the
final inspectors cartouche. The trapdoor breech block is dated
Model 1873 and has lost all of its color. The underside of the trapdoor has retained
95% of
its color. The serial number on the back of the action is followed by a
star, indicating that the rifle was
re-arsenaled. On the left side of the tang, a small wood chip has been repaired. Stamped on the lock plate is
US Springfield and the
spread eagle. The action locks up tight and functions as it should. Length of pull is 13”, Overall length is 54” and weight is 9.4 lbs. Good wood to metal fit – made by Springfield Armory. Condition:
Good to Very Good.
