Springfield U.S. Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle in .50-70 Gov't Caliber **Excellent Bore - Mfg 1869 -Antique**
Description: For consideration is a nice Springfield U.S. Model 1868 trapdoor rifle in .50-70 Government caliber. The Springfield Model 1868 was one of the rifles which used the trapdoor breechblock design developed by Erskine S. Allin. Originally, the trapdoor Springfields were created to convert Springfield Model 1863 rifled muskets to breech-loading rifles at a relatively low cost. This conversion consisted of replacing the percussion lock with the breech-loading trapdoor mechanism, and relining the barrels to convert them from .58 to .50 caliber. This proved problematic, because in the field, the lining tended to separate from the barrel. Nice, solid example of the US Springfield Model 1868 Rifle chambered in .50 centerfire. This weapon was created using surplus US Model 1863/4 percussion muskets as a base. This example has a lockplate dated 1863 with a breechblock date of 1869. All mechanics function properly and the weapon has a very fine bore. These weapons saw a lot of use in the westward expansion era until replaced by the US Model 1873 “Trapdoor” pattern. This is a key weapon in any advanced US martial weapons collection. This example has obvious finish wear and high edge wear. This fine Springfield would make a great addition to a collection or a strong way to start a new collection of militaria.
