U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Armory Trapdoor Rifle
Description: Serial #47084, .45-70, 32 1/2” barrel with a good bore that has light freckling within the grooves and some spots of darker pitting about midway down the bore. This rifle that has an overall mellow, plum-brown patina on the barrel that has silvered and faded from bayonet use at the muzzle, and mixes with hints of cold blue towards the breech. A 2nd type 1877 rear sight is installed. The lock and hammer likewise have traces of muted cold blue with speckled gray-brown on the balance. The “MODEL 1884” marked, low arch breech has a slightly brighter applied blue finish that mixes with a mottled gray patina with dark brown freckling along the exposed edges. The walnut stock has numerous small handling marks and blemishes throughout the lightly sanded finish with a still visible early oval cartouche on the left side of the wrist, and a painted rack number on the right side; “72”. The action is still tight and the breech lock-up is firm, although the extractor spring is either broken or removed, and the rifle is outfitted with both an original metal ramrod and a Model 1873 bayonet that matches the condition of the rifle and is missing its locking band. This is a great looking Trapdoor, with some early components, and is in very good plus condition overall.
