U.S. SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR RIFLE WITH ROD BAYONET
Description:
32-5/8 inch round barrel chambered in 45-70 caliber with a dark bore that looks rough but may clean up. Blade front sight and Buffington rifle-style rear. Overall gun has a deep plum brown patina with light pitting. Breech block marked "1884" shows significant darkening case colors inside. Clear eagle on lockplate but Springfield marking is light. All other markings are legible including the stock cartouche dated "1892". Very good wood fits well with a few scuffs and a minor crack near the muzzle. Correct buttplate, three swivels and cleaning rod bayonet. In spite of some exposure to the elements it appears this gun has seen little use. Arsenal marking on stock is a large 74 above a smaller 438 that is very well done adding a lot of character to this neat old gun. Excellent mechanics. 538,XXX serial range.
