US Springfield 1873 Rifle, 22" Barrel, 8 lbs.
Description: The US Springfield Model 1873 with a 22-inch barrel is technically classified as the Cavalry Carbine. While the standard infantry "rifle" version featured a much longer 32 5/8-inch barrel, the carbine was designed for ease of use by mounted troops on the American frontier. This model was the fifth variation of the Erskine S. Allin design. It earned its nickname from the breechblock that flipped upward and forward like a trapdoor to allow the insertion of a single cartridge. To accommodate mounted soldiers, the carbine was fitted with a swivel bar and ring (sling ring) on the left side of the receiver for attachment to a cavalry carbine sling. This specific 22-inch variant is famously associated with the Battle of the Little Bighorn. During the battle, Custer's 7th Cavalry was armed with these carbines. History often cites issues with their copper-cased ammunition, which could jam in the chamber after heating up, requiring soldiers to pry the casings out with knives.
