VERY SCARCE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 .50-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, ONLY APPROX. 11,000 MADE 1870-1873
Description: VERY SCARCE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 .50-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, ONLY APPROX. 11,000 MADE 1870-1873. This model was the last of the .50-70 Trapdoors, after which the Model 1873 .45-70 caliber rifles and carbines were produced. The Model 1870 is similar to the more common Model 1868 (over 51,000 produced) but differs in that the arch in the breech block is longer, the front of the receiver where the barrel is screwed in is shorter (apparent as the rear sight base is further forward) and this model was not serial numbered on either the barrel or receiver side like the M-1868. This is a particularly fine condition example that has not been cleaned. The barrels on these were finished “in the white” and this one shows no signs of being steel-wooled or polished- after nearly 150 years if the barrel is bright, someone worked on it! The lock plate has the correct Springfield/Eagle markings and is dated 1863 (these were made with left over Civil War parts). The breech block is correctly marked “Model 1870” etc. The left side of the stock retains three sharp cartouches and there are some faint rack or unit numbers stamped in the right side of the stock. There are a couple of age/stress cracks in the rear portion of the side of the butt stock coming forward from the bottom butt plate screw, but the cracks are not through and go nowhere. Correct rear sight, cleaning rod and swivels. Bore is bright and excellent with any marks or imperfections small. Tight action. A seldom encountered Indian Wars Springfield in particularly fine condition
