1903 Springfield / 05 Modifications in 30-03
M1903
Description:
For your review we have a very rare 1903 springfield rifle that survived the 30-06 conversion. You're looking at an original .30-03 unconverted Springfield Model 03/05.
Model 1903 Rifle with 1905 Modification.
Made at Springfield Armory, April 1905, to November, 1906. Caliber 30-03. Generally found below 270000 serial number range. This rifle has a barrel date of 05-06 with a serial number of 3150.
Differences in the 1905 modified rifles; ramrod-bayonet and latch were completely omitted; rear and front sight changed to Model 1905 type (with movable stud); double strap front band with bayonet stud and stacking swivel, swell added to the lower end of the shorter hand guard to protect rear sight. The Model 1905 knife-bayonet was designed for this rifle.
Very few, if any, of these rifles were ever issued. An original specimen of the Model 1903 with 1905 alteration still in 30-03 caliber is very rare. Most were altered to 30-06.
Rear sights of the 1905 modification are graduated to 2,400 yards and have a silver line above and below the peep sight aperture. This particular peep sight on this rifle
does not have the silver line above and below the peep sight aperture. It was changed at some point. (View pics) The rear sight ladder is correct for this 1905 modification. The peep slide is of a later date possibly. This rifle fully closes the bolt on the 30-03 cartridge, ejects the case when bolt is opened and reloads another into chamber. This was done with the inert rounds seen in picture. I posted as many pics with details as I could. For example on the bolt you can see the gas port on the ejector and the bolt.
