44-1/2 ACTION, WITH EXTRA BARREL AND DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS
Description: SPECIAL ORDER STEVENS No. 45 "RANGE MODEL" ON THE DESIRABLE 44-1/2 ACTION, WITH EXTRA BARREL AND DOUBLE SET TRIGGERS. This one comes with the matching number .22 Long Rifle half octagon barrel that is 30" long (standard for rim fire cartridges was 26"). It also comes with a 26" half octagon barrel and forend in .32-40 caliber that is not numbered to match. the action is mostly an uncleaned gray with traces of case color in the more protected areas. The double set triggers retain the adjustment screw and function properly. The matching .22 LR barrel retains fine deep blue and is fitted with a Lyman two leaf folding rear sight with a Rocky Mountain blade front sight. The receiver was factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight, but none is with this rifle. The bore is a bit dark with good rifling and some scattered roughness toward the middle of the bore- some brushing and scrubbing with J-B bore paste would probably improve it somewhat. The wood is generally excellent and the stock retains the attractive and distinctive Swiss butt plate. Wood to metal fit is tight and the stock and forend show only light handling and no abuse. The extra .32-40 barrel shows an excellent bore, no sights and has been drilled and tapped for scope blocks (10" spacing from the middle of the two pairs of holes). It retains fine blue with an fine forend that has one hairline sliver/crack coming forward from the receiver on the left side that is about invisible. This barrel might take some minor fitting as it does not quite screw in all the way to the receiver to have the top of the barrel exactly at the 12 O'clock position- better this way than screwing in too far. Should be easy to fit. the breech block is missing a firing pin and may be set up for center fire. It may need separate blocks to use both barrels. I would think that the company CPA who reproduces the Stevens 44-1/2 could make everything right with this fine set. Very unusual with extra long barrel and double set triggers.
