Rossi Circuit Judge .45 Colt/.410 Gauge 3” Revolver Carbine 18.5” Exc. Condition with Box
Description: The Rossi Circuit Judge is something of an anomaly in the world of firearms, being what is essentially a “revolver carbine” or “revolving carbine”. It combines the action of a revolver with the stock and barrel length of a rifle. Not many rifles have ever been built that fit into this category of firearms design. The only other rifle of this type which comes to mind is the Colt New Model Revolving Rifle, sometimes known as the M1855 Revolving Rifle. It was a cap-and-ball, black powder rifle based upon Colt’s Model 1855 Side Hammer Pocket Revolver. Although it made a brief appearance in the American Civil War, the New Model was not very popular and was discontinued in 1864 due to serious design flaws. In a way, the failure of the M1855 hurt the perception of the effectiveness of revolving carbines for a long period of time. While revolver carbines based on the 1873 Peacemaker have been made, they usually do not have a wooden forearm and are not meant to be held like a traditional rifle. In a very real sense, the Circuit Judge had a lot of preconceived notions to overcome in order to be accepted by the gun buying public. One of the first tasks of the designer was to protect the shooter’s offhand arm from the heat and gases that escape to the side whenever a revolver is fired. Due to the slight gap between the cylinder and the breech-end of the barrel, a portion of the gases used to direct the bullet down the barrel will escape sideways. Since revolvers are usually held only by the grip, these escaping gasses do not generally present a threat to the shooter. In rifle form however, they can be harmful to the shooter’s arm. To solve this issue, the designer created a type of two-piece deflector or shield which redirects the escaping gasses away from the shooter’s arm. One is attached on the right side of the frame while the other is attached to the yoke. Like the Judge, the Circuit Judge uses shallow-groove rifling in the barrel to stabilize the .452”-diameter bullets while minimizing the amount of interference with the shot-shell patterns. The 18.5” barrel is threaded at the muzzle to accept two types of removable choke. One is essentially a thread protector sleeve that protects the threading when shooting .45 Colt cartridges that will also function perfectly as a cylinder choke when shooting .410 shells. The second type is a toothed choke, or straight-rifle choke. It essentially functions as a “full” choke for use ONLY with .410 shells. The real advantage of the Rossi Circuit Judge lies in its multi-purpose nature. It can propel .45-caliber bullets at much higher velocity than any revolver making it far more suitable for self-defense. The ability to shoot both 2.5” and 3.0” .410 shells, as well as the variety of loads available in the form of birdshot, buckshot, and slug, makes the Circuit Judge effective for use in hunting both birds and small deer. It will also provide effective defense against snakes as well. These capabilities have ultimately allowed the Circuit Judge to become a very popular rifle. The example shown here is in excellent condition and has been fired but a few times, given the very light powder burns on the face of the cylinder. The wood furniture exhibits little handling wear. The fiberoptic sights are a big help when putting the crosshairs on a target quickly is important. The Weaver rail allows for the easy installation of an optic of the user’s choice. The rifle comes with its original box, manual, both chokes, a cleaning brush and string, hammer extension, and the choke removal tool.
