The Last of the True Tommy Guns – The Thompson Auto Ordnance 1927A1 West Hurley
Description: The Last of the True Tommy Guns – The Thompson Auto Ordnance 1927A1 West Hurley Manufacturer: Auto Ordnance Model: 1927A1 Caliber: .45 ACP Barrel: 18 inches Finish: blue Stocks: Walnut Serial Number: 18824 Description: Last of the real Auto Ordnance Thompson 1927A1 A beautiful and pristine, all original Tommy Gun manufactured in 1990 in West Hurley, NY. This piece is in high 99% condition and appears it is un-fired. Includes the fifty-round drum magazine. (Should magazine capacity be an issue in your State, there may be a solution.) This is the finest, untouched Auto Ordnance 1927A1 we have come across in many years. The photos will show it to be as it left the factory, more than thirty-years ago. There is no damage anywhere on the piece and it is fully operational. No wear is present, not even the typical marring caused by the pulling back of the charging handle at the top of the receiver. There is no indication that this piece has ever fired a round. Here is a true Tommy Gun, locked away in a time capsule, I doubt there are many like it. The bore is clean, bright with no frosting, showing deep lands and grooves. The barrel has nicely rounded fins, not the unfinished, sharp-edged type. Has a Cutts design compensator with Thompson bullet logo. Furniture is in excellent condition, butt stock showing nicely grained patterns and colors. Both grips show a lesser degree of polishing, though very nice. The bluing and the actual metal finish have an almost commercial-like quality, not the rough dull grey/black, rather a polished blue shine from beneath due to the nicely finished, polished steel. Detractions – Manufactured in 1990 had good points and bad. The good being quality of workmanship, finish, reliability of the design and that nothing ever seemed to break. In addition, they are known for feeding every kind of .45 ammunition, although ball was recommended. The bad was Numrich had long run-out of Lyman rear sights close to the beginning of production in 1975, so a copy was made which was not well received for the design eliminated the adjustable windage leaving shooters only able to adjust the elevation less they cared to knock the front sight left or right. To a minor point, but one considered a quality issue, the butt stock sling swivel had been replaced with an inferior stamped design for again, Numrich had run-out of stockpiled GI parts. The current “Auto Ordnance” Thompson is manufactured by Kahr Arms, which is a look-alike design though very different. The Kahr has proven to be an inferior quality “knockoff” of the original Auto Ordnance Thompson, they are not the same and cannot be compared. A cursory search will bring up ample information concerning the Kahr design faults and its unreliability. To simplify; a Kahr Thompson's serial number always begins with a letter “K”, denoting not okay. We have in stock parts and accessories and any issues with the piece may be addressed if one wished. The rear sight can be replaced with an earlier windage adjustable sight or even with a new-old-stock original GI Lyman sight. The recoil springs can be replaced to include a buffer thus eliminating the stiff bolt action which some find requires the use of a tool to work the action. Furniture can be refinished to a high-grade commercial finish, or a detachable stock added to lessen the profile. A full-auto selector switch added to the lower which mimics a full-auto Thompson, but which in-fact operates as a hold-open to facilitate changing of the drum without a need for a "third-hand". Call to discuss any modifications which might be of interest to you. We have the two-volume set - Colt Thompson Submachine Gun by Gordon Herigstad, brand new, available at $300.
