The Webley & Scott Model 700 is one of the most respected post-war British game guns, combining traditional English handling characteristics with the robust construction and reliability that made Webley & Scott famous throughout the sporting world. Built in Birmingham during the company's golden years, the Model 700 earned a reputation as an elegant yet practical field gun and remains highly sought after by upland hunters and collectors today.
Manufactured in 1968, this example is a particularly attractive and well-preserved specimen that appears to be one of the higher-grade variants offered within the 700 series. Chambered for 12 gauge with 2.75-inch chambers, the gun features 28-inch barrels choked Improved Cylinder (.006") and Full (.037"), a classic British game-gun combination ideally suited for everything from walked-up birds to driven pheasants.
Weighing just 6 pounds 4 ounces, this shotgun exhibits the lively handling and effortless balance that distinguish fine English sporting guns from their heavier continental counterparts. The dimensions are equally appealing, with a 14.75-inch length of pull, 1.5-inch drop at comb, and 2.25-inch drop at heel, providing a stock configuration that will fit many shooters comfortably.
The shotgun is built on a traditional boxlock action featuring double triggers, automatic ejectors, and a non-automatic safety. Mechanically, the gun is excellent. The action remains smooth and locks up tightly, the triggers are crisp, the bores are clear, and the ejectors are strong and properly timed.
Condition is described as excellent overall, showing only very faint wear consistent with careful use over more than five decades. The preservation of both metal and wood is particularly impressive for a field gun of this vintage.
The case-colored receiver retains excellent appearance and is adorned with fine scroll engraving covering nearly the entire action body. The maker's name, "Webley & Scott," is prominently displayed on both sides of the receiver. Additional fine scroll engraving extends to the blued bottom metal and trigger guard, reflecting the higher-grade nature of this gun.
The barrels retain their attractive blued finish and are topped by a traditional concave game rib fitted with a silver front bead, a classic sighting arrangement favored by generations of British game shooters.
Equally impressive is the deluxe straight-grip walnut stock and splinter forend. The wood displays sharp diamond-point checkering throughout, while the checkered butt and blank gold initial oval inset into the belly of the stock add further touches of refinement. The straight-hand stock contributes significantly to the gun's fast handling and traditional English character.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
Elegant, lightweight, and exceptionally well preserved, this Webley & Scott Model 700 represents British gunmaking at its finest. With its high-grade engraving, beautiful walnut, lively handling characteristics, and outstanding mechanical condition, it is equally suited for the field, the collection, or the gun room. Examples of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to find, making this a particularly attractive opportunity for the enthusiast of classic English sporting arms.
