This Webley started life as a 300 Rook.
The bore was terrible so was rebored / rechambered to 32/40 which was originally offered in this model.
The rebore didn't turn out as expected - the smith said it wouldn't cut well.
I suspect he simply needed sharp or better tooling but it is what it is...
Now, the rifle has what appears to be similar to Metford rifling with a bore of .315" The groove could be about .320" but I haven't slugged it for that measurement.
It may shoot as is or could be a great candidate for another attempt at a rebore although the current chambering does limit choices there.
These round block '02 Webleys are a bit larger than most rook rifles and were originally chambered in rather more sporting cartridges.
Along with the 32/40, 360 No.5, 300 Sherwood etc., one was even chambered in 455 Webley service pistol cartridge.
Holland and Holland felt the action was strong enough to chamber one in 22 Savage Hi Power! I'm not suggesting that...
The metal on this one has quite a bit of wear but the wood has survived well and is quite sound with a small repair to the right side of the forend.
I have another '02 (not for sale) which was in very similar condition and had it restored. Engraving by John Todd.
This rifle is represented in the last photo to show what a beautiful swan this little ugly duckling could become!
