Antique WHITNEY-BURGESS-MORSE .45-70 Govt Octagonal Barrel SERPENTINE Lever
RARE, 1 of 3,000; Fancy Walnut
Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Whitney Burgess Morse Model 1878 Large Frame Lever Action Rifle chambered in .45-70 Govt. These were made by the Whitney Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut, and this is one of fewer than 3,000 produced. This is a rare example of a lever action repeating rifle that was made during the latter part of the 19th century being called the “Burgess Model 1878 Long Range Repeating Rifle”, also called the Whitney Burgess Morse lever action rifle. While made by Whitney, it used patented designs by A. Burgess and G.W. Morse. It was made to compete in military trials in 1878, though, like many others, it was not ultimately accepted.
Production ran from 1878-1882. Eli Whitney, the inventor of the Cotton Gin, was also well known for manufacturing firearms, and his son, also named Eli Whitney, followed in his footsteps. The Whitney Arms Company expanded and the area around the company eventually became known “Whitneyville”, making firearms throughout the 19th century.
From 1880 to 1886, Whitney Arms would also produce the “Whitney Kennedy”, which featured refinements to the design, and was also chambered in the very popular .44-40 cartridge. The most distinctive visual feature of these rifles was the unique “Burgess” serpentine style of lever that was used until 1883 but would later switch to the loop used in most other repeating designs of the time.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is reflective with nice rifling. The wood has some really nice grain. The forestock shows saddle wear on the bottom where it meets the receiver; the butt stock has a chip at the toe and old stable splits around the wrist, along with some brass tacks. This would have been a powerful rifle to have across the saddle on the range in the 1880s and into the 20th Century!
