EARLY WHITNEY-KENNEDY SCARCE LARGE FRAME 28" OCT RIFLE, 45-60 CAL., #E 5XX, MADE 1883
Description: EARLY WHITNEY-KENNEDY SCARCE LARGE FRAME OCTAGON RIFLE IN .45-60 CALIBER WITH LONG 28” BARREL, #E 5XX, MADE NANUARY-MARCH OF 1883. These fine rifles were made from about 1879-1886 with most of production being the medium frame size handling pistol size cartridges like the .38-40 and .44-40. The large or heavy frame model is significantly less common. This example in .45-60 (simply a shortened .45-70 case), recently came out of Arizona. All matching numbers on receiver, lever, stock and inside the butt plate. Metal surfaces are a freckled, but uncleaned gray brown overall. Action is tight and bore is fairly good with light surface scattered roughness and good rifling. Original buckhorn rear sight with Rocky Mountain blade front sight, sharp correct markings, has the early style “S” lever. The worst part of this one is the butt stock which has seen some hard, honest use. There is a chip out at the toe and slivers out along each side of the upper tang- all old and worn in. The forend shows a shallow sliver out along the front left side to the forend cap along with a small ding and crack coming back from the cap below. Screws are good and this one has a lot of frontier character. Some careful wood added to the butt stock would do wonders for this one. The Whitney-Kennedy was such a great design that Winchester bought the company and shut it down so as not to have the competition!
