EARLY WHITNEY-KENNEDY SPECIAL ORDER .44-40 OCTAGON RIFLE WITH 2" LONGER THAN STANDARD BARREL
Description: EARLY WHITNEY-KENNEDY SPECIAL ORDER .44-40 OCTAGON RIFLE WITH 2" LONGER THAN STANDARD BARREL LENGTH, #2XXX. These were made from 1879 - 1886 with a total production of approx. 15,000 rifles, carbines, military muskets in both medium frame (like this one) and large frame models (calibers like .45-60 etc.). After serial numbers reached 5,000, Letter prefixes from A-T were used with 1-1000 and then the next letter was utilized. Judging from that, I would assuje this example was probably made in the 1879-1882 years. This example has the early "S" or serpentine lever (used through mid-1883) with later rifles and carbines having the more familiar "loop" lever as on Winchesters and Marlins. The standard barrel length for this model that was made in .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40 was 24" in round, octagon or half-octagon was 24" and this one has the scarce 26" length. Overall mainly gray metal on barrel, mag and receiver. Stock and forearm basically solid and show normal frontier wear with some saddle wear on the forearm bottom. Buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and small blade front sight. Barrel is marked with "44 CAL C.F." (.44-40) and also with the normal Whitney Armory and Kennedy stamping. The upper tang has the patent dates etc. Action is tight, half-cock safety holds securely and surprisingly, the bore is fine with deep rifling and only scattered light surface corrosion. Interestingly, Winchester bought out Whitney in 1888 and promptly discontinued all production. They obviously recognized a fine rifle and competition to its own line! A fairly scarce rifle especially with extra long barrel. This one recently came out of Arizona. $1950. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Manufacturer: WHITNEY Model: KENNEDY Serial Number: 2XXX Barrel Length: 26" OCT. Condition: VG Bore Condition: FINE |
