Cased Winchester Junior Trapshooting Outfit w/ Model 20 .410 Shotgun
Description: This is one of the true rarities in Winchester collecting, made during the 1920s as part of Winchester's "Junior Rifle Corps Moving Target Division" - meaning "moving" clay targets vs stationary rifle targets. At the time, Winchester was promoting youth shooting sports through the "Corps" and the guns/accessories to go along with it. The Model 20 Junior Trapshooting Outfit, at a whopping $34.95 was by far the most ambitious and expensive of the kits. By comparison, the Model 04 Range Kit was only $12.95, and a brand new Winchester Model 1894 carbine was about $23 (from the 1918 catalog). Likely because of this, sales of the kits were very limited, and combined with heavy use by kids and families, the kits and accessories are extremely rare today, almost non-existent really. Model 20 shotguns are rare by themselves and typically in well-used condition. A complete Junior Trapshooting Outfit won the Silver Medal at the 2017 NRA National Annual Meeting and Collector's Show - the ultimate testament to the rarity and desirability of these sets! As for this set, the original Winchester synthetic case is in estate-original complete untouched/uncleaned condition and is perfect structurally, even including the original key. The interior is bright original green with all the straps and dividers intact and in perfect condition. The original Winchester paper interior label retains brilliant color and is 99% complete - on the rare occasions these are sold, the fragile labels and interiors are often in rough condition from use. The accessories are all period correct, with proper labels, graphic designs, and Winchester "New Haven" addresses from the 1920s; This makes them all quite valuable collectibles on their own. The full box of ammunition is a colorful label style and size that was made specifically for the Junior Trapshooting Kits. They are rarely seen boxes, and single high condition examples like this consistently sell in antique ammunition s for more than what a minty Model 20 is worth! The label is bright and in fantastic shape, and the box is perfect structurally. The grease and rust remover boxes are also in perfect condition with practically unused, correct tubes with bright complete graphics. The early empty oil can has brilliant original graphics, no dents or other issues, and importantly retains its original cap, which is almost always missing. The cleaning rod is like new with its original cloth bag and tips. The only real wear on it is "case wear" through the wood finish on the periphery of the handle from being rotated in the case - just what a collector wants to see. The mini hand trap (thrower) was made by Winchester specifically for the Junior Trapshooting Outfit and its small clay targets; It is in high condition and perfect mechanically. Last but not least, the original partial of 28 score sheets is clean and bright - and as you can imagine almost never (if ever?) seen or sold. The little Model 20 shotgun is nearly mint, with almost all of the original bright blue and wood finish, only minor high edge wear, flakes, and handling marks. Perfect mechanically with a mint bore. Only flaw aside from handling marks is a neat hole along the toe line for a sling eye. According George Madis and Winchester Arms Collectors Association reference material, only about 23,600 Model 20s were manufactured, and 12,000 of those were made for export. So that leaves about 11,000 made for the US market between 1919 and 1925. Taken together, this is an almost impossible to find Winchester Junior Trapshooting Outfit that is substantially complete, and importantly the case creates the foundation for a patient collector to finalize the set over time. Due to their rarity and value, these sets are usually sold via national . So this is a nice opportunity to buy one directly without the risks of a major (most notably, no inspection period) or the exorbitant prices.
