An excellent and most interesting Winchester Model 1895 saddle ring carbine in .30-06 caliber with 22" barrel.
This carbine has been fitted with Model 1903 Springfield front and rear sights. Careful examination of the workmanship relative to mounting of both front Springfield sight and rear Springfield sight indicate these sights were mounted on special order at the Winchester factory. Careful examination of the carbine's barrel, forearm , and upper handguard indicate metal fitting and stocking for the 1903 Springfield rear sight was done at the Winchester factory. Though the Forearm has relief cuts for two upper band retaining springs usual on a carbine with standard Winchester rear sight it is obvious neither the rear band spring cut nor the spot on the barrel where the spring inevitably leaves scratches have ever felt a rear handguard retaining spring. Please see the detail pictures showing these areas of the carbine. Winchester factory records are only available for Winchester Model 1895 arms made up to 1907 ( serial 1-59,999). The serial number of this carbine (#94354) indicates it was built in 1914.
The .30-40 US Krag cartridge was the most popular chambering for Model 1895 arms, especially the carbine. Winchester Model 1895 arms, especially carbines, built for the .30-06 Springfield cartridge prior to 1920 are scarce. The most logical conclusion for the existence of this carbine is that it was specially ordered to be the personal arm of a US Army officer - most likely a cavalry officer - who was familiar with and liked the fine design of the Springfield Model 1903 sight and wanted his personal arm to fire the US standard .30-06 cartridge. A corollary to this can be seen in ther Winchester Model 1895 'NRA' muskets built in .30-06 the vast majority of which were built by Winchester with US Springfield Krag rear sights for military match shooting.
One should also consider the historical period in which this carbine was built. In 1914 the Mexican Civil War raged along the US Mexico border. Pancho Villa was at the height of his career and the US Government was rapidly moving troops, especially Cavalry regiments to border posts in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona to protect US property and interests and prevent any Mexican incursions on US soil. There was also considerable discussion in Washington as to which faction the US should back among the combatants in Mexico and whether or not the US should intervene in the fight. President Wilson decided to back Venustiano Carranza letting Carranza forces cross US territory to attack Pancho Villa from the rear. Villa struck back by raiding Columbus New Mexico in 1916 and the rest is history. A US Cavalry officer on 'The Border' in 1914 would be delighted having his own handy lever action carbine firing government ammunition and using familiar government sights. The original owner , who's special features likely cost him a premium , evidently took very good care of his carbine.
CONDITION: This Special Model '95 carbine is in excellent original condition. The barrel, receiver, lever, magazine, sights, and front band retain 96% original factory blue - even the steel buttplate retains 96% finish - with some very light handling marks. The bore and mechanical functions are excellent. The trigger and all screws retain 95% original blue, and the hammer retains most of its casehardened finish. The butt stock, forearm, and upper handguard retain 95%+ of their original oil finish.
An exceptional Winchester Model 1895 carbine for the collector. This Winchester has been in a private collection for over twenty years and I am told it will be pictured in a forthcoming book on the Winchester 1895.
