Offered here and just acquired is this most interesting and original Winchester Model 1892 saddle ring carbine in .44 caliber with historic usage.
In 1913, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) was actively involved in collecting, studying, and exhibiting specimens from the Andean region and South America, largely driven by the
Chapman South American Expedition (1912-1913) and the beginning of the Roosevelt South American Expedition (1913-1914). While major, immersive, permanent Andean animal habitat dioramas (like those for African mammals) were not yet fully established in 1913, the museum was rapidly acquiring specimens for future display, particularly birds and small mammals, and integrating them into temporary or newly organized hall exhibits.
 The Winchester Model 1892 was produced from 1892 to 1941, with serial numbers starting around 1 and reaching just over 1,000,000 by the end of production.
Serial number 781201 falls within the range of numbers produced in 1914.  It has seen a great deal of usage with its receiver generally a mixture of original brown and grey patina. The barrel has majority of finish but thinning to grey patina. The bore is still very good and mechanically fine. The stock also has seen a good deal of use with assorted dents and marks from usage and a long scratch as well on left side of stock. There are two patches of rust near to muzzle on barrel however we have not treated them and left “as is”.

Along with the Winchester when purchased by a collector over 40 years ago is an old tag written
decades ago which reads:
“This Winchester 44 carbine, 11 shot repeater, obtained by Paul G. Howes in 1913, was used in the Colombian Andes Expedition in (1913) + W.B.Truman 1916. Tools Monkeys for American Museum of Natural History’s (Red Howlers) Group… Also collected Agouti ,jaguar, Harpy Eagle (also Paccary, jaguar, capybara, harpy eagle “

The historic nature of the rifle is evidenced by this tag but even moreso by the evidence on the underside of stock which has been carved/etched with the name of many of these animals plus "notches" in butt which may have documented the animals he killed for later exhibiting.

A research as well into one of the two names on the tag attached to the rifle yielded the identification of Paul Griswold Howes who was an American naturalist and museum professional, born in 1892 and died in 1984.
In 1913, as a very young man, he participated in an expedition to the Andes with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). During this trip he helped establish one of the early South American research field stations for the museum’s scientific work.
Also in 1913, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Museum of Natural History — a recognition conferred by AMNH at that time, indicating his involvement and contributions to the institution.
After his South American fieldwork, Howes transitioned into museum stewardship and, by 1918, became an assistant curator at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, Connecticut (then a local natural history museum).
Over the decades, he advanced to Curator of Natural History and eventually Director of the Bruce Museum, serving there for nearly five decades. He was deeply involved in building collections, producing dioramas, collecting specimens, and creating educational material.
His museum work included extensive field collecting, art and scientific illustration, specimen mounting, exhibition design, and writing.
The arm was presumably acquired from his estate sometime after his death and came to us directly from that collection.
Included with this rifle’s purchase will be a letter from us attesting to its ownership.
A fine piece of Americana which should appeal to the Winchester collector as well as any collector of historic artifacts.
