Winchester Model 1873 Rifle Third Model .44-40 24” Cody Letter 1882 Antique
Description:
For your consideration is a Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in New Haven, CT in 1882. It features a 24” round barrel, lever action, buckhorn rear sight, integrated dust cover, tubular magazine, brass buttstock trap door and walnut stocks. It is chambered for .44-40 (WCF .44).
The Model 1873 is one of the most iconic of American rifles. Given the moniker “The Gun that Won the West”, the ‘73 was there during the Indian and Range Wars of the late 19th century. Cowboys, natives, settlers, miners, law enforcement, express companies and hunters all found these rifles as indispensable tools. They made excellent companions to revolvers at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, such as the infamous Colt Frontier Six-Shooter.
The receiver and barrel finish have mostly turned to a plum patina with original blue in protected areas. There is scattered pitting, primarily on the receiver and muzzle end of mag tube.
Stocks are in good, solid original condition with an immobile crack along the grain near the upper butt plate tang (as shown in photo).
Bore is very good, fairly bright, with well-defined rifling and some pitting.
Mechanically excellent with tight action and crisp trigger. I did not test fire it, but did cycle a cartridge to check loading/extraction without issue. The dust cover properly retracts with the lever throw.
Overall, a nice/solid example of a Winchester 1873 for your collection and/or shooting pleasure.
