This is a Winchester Model 1890 that is half nickel plated with a 22" barrel in 22 Short caliber. Even though the half plating is rare with only 1500 or so guns being done in the first 340,000 the barrel length is much rarer. Only 5 others were documented at 22 inches in the records that remain. The "P" on the top of the barrel at the breach indicates it was a mail order barrel which supports its shorter special order length. And with only 117 special order barrel lengths made for the first 340,000 guns, shorter or longer barrels are exceedingly rare. The sights include a Marble's 34W front sight and a Marble's Sporting adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The man that owned this gun obviously preferred Marble sights. The overall metal is a nice deep blue color with some spots that will probably come off with Kroil. The wood is 100% original finish and its overall condition is very good. It does have a 1" long crack leading off of the bottom tang toward the butt and a small 1/2" long crack beginning off of the back top tang on the right side. There is a very small chip at the forearm screw on each side. The barrel has a good clean bore with no pits with very clear and good riflings. The lettering and proof marks are sharp and clear and are the 10th barrel marking style (90-8) "Made in U.S.A." The action is smooth and responsive. Some of the plating is flaking off of the bottom tang, but that can be expected for a rifle made in September of 1919, almost 100 years ago.
