Mackey Safari & Fine Arms is pleased to offer an exceptional Winchester Model 70 Custom Classic “Leopard” rifle chambered in .338 Winchester Magnum. Completed in 1987 by the Winchester Custom Shop, this rifle is the factory-documented “Leopard” rifle from a specially commissioned five-rifle Winchester Model 70 Custom Classic “Big Five” group.
The included Winchester Custom Shop letter states that three years of construction produced five collector-grade Model 70 rifles, each depicting one of the African Big Five. The letter specifically identifies this serial-numbered rifle as “LEOPARD” and “one of the group.” In other words, this is not one rifle from a production run of Leopard-themed rifles; it is the Leopard rifle from Winchester’s documented five-rifle Big Five commission.
The rifle features a 24-inch blued Winchester Proof Steel barrel with hooded beaded blade front sight on ramp base, folding rear sight on island base, front sling swivel, factory markings, and “CUSTOM CLASSIC” on the left side of the barrel. The barrel is embellished with a gold-inlaid muzzle band, “LEOPARD” inlaid in gold with a gold border, scroll engraving accents, and a gold band at the breech.
The controlled-round-feed Model 70 action is coin finished and displays near full-coverage tight English scroll engraving with fine gold-inlaid borders. The rifle also features a jeweled bolt body and follower, three-position safety, blued extractor and bolt release, and engraved bolt knob and shroud. The top of the action wall is signed by German Master Engraver Gerd Rausch, whose work is confirmed by the included factory letter.
The rifle is fitted with a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x scope in matching engraved and gold-inlaid quick-detach rings. The one-piece Grisel bottom metal is coin finished and engraved en suite, with gold linework flowing through the inside-the-bow release trigger guard and surrounding a relief gold-inlaid leopard stalking from a tree at the center of the straddle floorplate.
The stock is beautifully figured English walnut with wraparound multi-point checkering, ebony fore-end tip, shadowline cheekpiece, leather-covered recoil pad, engraved and gold-inlaid recoil crossbolt, inletted and engraved rear sling swivel, and a coin-finished Grisel grip cap engraved with a gold-inlaid roaring leopard.
This is a highly distinctive and factory-documented Winchester Custom Shop rifle: a controlled-round-feed Model 70 in .338 Winchester Magnum, master engraved by Gerd Rausch, extensively gold inlaid throughout, and built as the Leopard rifle from Winchester’s five-rifle Big Five commission.
Condition: Excellent overall. The rifle retains approximately 99% original blue, coin, and gold finishes with only minimal handling evidence. The stock and fore-end checkering remain sharp. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The scope optics are clear. Mechanically excellent. The original box is very fine with some storage wear.
