ANTIQUE SERIAL NUMBER 1894 .38-55 SADDLE RING CARBINE, #20XXX, WITH FACTORY LETTER
Description: ANTIQUE SERIAL NUMBER 1894 .38-55 SADDLE RING CARBINE, #20XXX, WITH FACTORY LETTER. The factory letter with this early carbine states that the serial number was applied on February 16, 1897, that it was received in the warehouse on May 26, 1897 and shipped June 16, 1897. Of course, it is listed as a Carbine, .38-55 caliber. This is a good, early carbine that has seen normal use. It retains good barrel and magazine blue in the more protected areas- like bottom of the barrel/top of the mag tube etc.- and has the correct carbine ladder rear sight with slide intact and typical carbine front sight. All markings are sharp on the barrel and upper tang. The receiver is mostly a dull gray with some light shallow freckling mainly on the rear portion of the right side and good blue is retained around the saddle ring. Butt stock and forend are fine with good wood to metal fit and one small chip at the upper tang/receiver juncture that has been nicely fitted and filled with a small piece of wood. Screws are generally fine to excellent and the action is tight. Bore is surprisingly fine+ with only some very minor scattered surface roughness. Hard to find such an early .38-55 Carbine!
