Iconic Repeating Rifle Manufactured in 1891

Here we present a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in .38-56 WCF, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The 1886 was a collaboration between John Moses Browning and his brother, Matthew Sandifer Browning, to build a big game rifle to replace the Model 1876. This was Browning’s first repeating rifle design adopted by Winchester. The 1886 remains well known as the hunting rifle of President Teddy Roosevelt. Cartridges were big and powerful to include the smaller 33 WCF to the largest, 50-100, with the most popular caliber being the .45-70 and the 45-90.

This rifle features a 25 3/4-inch octagon barrel chambered for .38-56 WCF, which was specifically released and chambered in this rifle. The top of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.” The breech is marked “.38-56 W.C.F.”

The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is 70%. The markings are clear. Case colors are mostly silvered. The walnut stock is smooth and solid. Just a few light scratches near the butt plate. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a sharp looking Winchester 1886 in its tailor made caliber!
