FINE CONDITION 1873 2ND. MOD. 22" ROUND BARREL FULL MAGAZINE , SHOTGUN BUTT SHORT RIFLE, .38-40 #64XXX, MADE 1881
Description: FINE CONDITION AND ESPECIALLY RARE 1873 2ND. MODEL 22" ROUND BARREL FULL MAGAZINE , SHOTGUN BUTT SHORT RIFLE, .38-40 #64XXX, MADE 1881. Most short rifles in the models 1873, 1892 and 1894 have 20" barrels with any other length being very unusual. This one, like so many 2nd. Models, was made on a carbine receiver and later changed to a rifle by putting two filler screws where the saddle ring staple would have normally gone. It seems Winchester had an abundance of carbine receivers and not enough rifle receivers during this time as most of the 2nd. Models rifles I've seen have ths altered carbine receiver. This example has the correct 8 3/8" length forend which is one inch shorter than those on standard length rifles (a good way to tell if a barrel has been cut, especially on half magazine rifles). Also the magazine retaining band is in the correct location. A call to the Cody Museum listed this rifle was a "Carbine" which I expected as I have seen this before. Overall condition is excellent with nearly full blue on the receiver that shows only minor thinning/flaking. The dust cover is intact and correctly installed on the screwed in rail used on 2nd. Model 1873s. The barrel, magazine and forend cap retain deep blue with only some very minor scattered freckling that one would have to look closely to detect. Stock and forend are excellent with tight wood to metal screws, bore is excellent and very bright with a couple of minor spots that amount to little. Screws are generally excellent, still some aged blue turning plum on the upper tang, some good case color on the back of the hammer, original buckhorn rear sight with Winchester short blade front sight. The smooth steel shotgun butt plate had some active rust on it when I got this one, so I soaked it overnight with some oil and wiped most of it off- could probably be cleaned up a bit more. Tight action and mellow brass lifter. A superior condition extremely rare 1873 short rifle.
