Description:
Factory engraved New Haven Arms Co. Henry lever action rifle. 44 Henry RF, 24" octagon barrel, blue finish, walnut stock. Serial #5011. The top and sides of the brass receiver and the heel and bottom of the brass buttplate are engraved with the standard Henry engraving pattern executed by Samuel J. The front receiver panels are engraved with large floral designs in double bordered panels with scalloped edges. The left sideplate is engraved with a hunting dog on point surrounded by open scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The right sideplate is covered with scrollwork on a punch-dot background. Both side plates are engraved with double-line borders with wavy edges. The top and sides of the receiver and the upper tang are engraved with scroll-work flourishes on punch-dot background. The heel of the buttplate has scroll and punch-dot engraving and, unusually, the bottom of the buttplate is engraved with scroll work. The face of the butt trap is engraved with a star burst. The buttstock is a replacement. The barrel legend has bee recut and the barrel has been renumbered. The front sight blade is a replacement. Both receiver tangs have been repaired. The butt trap contains the four-piece iron cleaning rod with brass tip that was provided with later manufacture Henry rifles. The engraving is original factory work and the scrollwork remains sharp and clear. The delicately engraved hunting dog on the left sideplate is crisp. It is a representative example of a scarce, actual Samuel J. Hoggson factory engraved Henry lever action rifle.
