RARE ANTIQUE WINCHESTER 1886 45-70 SPECIAL LIGHTWEIGHT RIFLE 1 of 195 FREE SHIPPING
Description: Wow what a find! This is a Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle in caliber 45-70, serial number 113899, made in 1897. My Cody Museum email sheet, which will be provided with the rifle, shows the serial number applied September 20, 1897 with the following configuration: Type: Rifle Caliber: 45/70 Barrel length: 22 inches Sights: Lyman Hunting front and Flat Top Sporting rear Shotgun butt, Rubber butt plate 4 Cartridges Special Light Weight Received in warehouse on September 24, 1897 Shipped from warehouse on September 24, 1897, Order number 13169 An extensive survey of the Cody Museum records indicate only 195 light/special light/extra light Models 1886 fall in before serial number 114,000 (the remainder of the 2,771 were made after serial number 114,000 and are all "modern" rifles). So, seldom do we find an antique light weight 1886, and this one not only letters to a T but is in the very desirable 45-70 caliber! In my 35 years as a collector and dealer, this is the only one I've come across that shows "Special Light Weight" in the records, but I'm sure there are others, based on the Cody survey. CONDITION: Bright excellent bore showing some very sparsely scattered spots of mild oxidation or frosting and otherwise strong rifling throughout. The barrel of this 1897-made rifle retains about 90% original blue showing some scattered mild thinning to pleasant blue-gray patina, a few sparsely scattered pinprick pits and freckles. The action retains about 40% original bright blue, strongest along the protected areas with the balance toned to an honest pewter-gunmetal patina, also showing some scattered light handling marks. The hammer shows generous smoky case-hardened colors throughout while the lever shows generous wisps of vibrant colors in the protected areas toning overall to a mild gray. The bolt retains about 95% original bright blue, the loading gate shows some streaks of bright fire blue and all markings remain intact and strong. The plain walnut buttstock and forend remain in very fine condition showing scattered light dings and handling marks from the years. The rifle is equipped with shotgun-style hard rubber buttplate that rates near excellent showing a very tiny flake at the toe. The rifle is equipped with a flattop sporting rear sight that shows a nice little period modification with a small celluloid triangle pinned to the blade just below the u-notch, the front sight is a Lyman ivory bead and the action functions well mechanically.
