Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 Lightweight 38-55 WCF
Description:
Manufactured in 1909, this Winchester Deluxe Model 1894 takedown rifle is an outstanding special-order example chambered in the desirable .38-55 W.C.F. caliber. While more than seven and a half million Model 1894s were produced, the overwhelming majority were standard working rifles, making deluxe, high-condition, special-order examples especially desirable to collectors.
This rifle combines a rarely encountered group of features, including takedown configuration, lightweight profile barrel, 2/3 length magazine, pistol grip deluxe stock, checkered wood, and shotgun butt. Although the serial number falls outside the surviving factory ledger range, research compiled by Oswalt and Hawk from the remaining 353,999 records helps illustrate the scarcity of these individual features: only 515 Model 1894s were ordered with 2/3 length magazines, approximately one in ten were takedowns, one in twenty had pistol grip stocks, 10,512 were ordered with checkered stocks, and 17,768 with shotgun butts.
The rifle has Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The lightweight nickel steel barrel bears the two-line address and patent marking, nickel steel marking, and caliber designation. The upper tang carries the three-line model and trademark marking, with the serial number on the bottom of the receiver. The lower tang is marked “7517 RX,” with “7517” repeated in the stock inlet along with “94.”
Sighting equipment consists of a low-profile variation of Winchester’s No. 21 sporting front sight, an elevation adjustable rear sight, and a Lyman combination peep sight mounted on the upper tang. The rifle is stocked with attractive deluxe walnut featuring H-pattern checkering on the forearm and pistol grip stock, a hard rubber grip cap, and a checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate with the Winchester logo. Overall, this is a highly appealing and scarce deluxe Model 1894 with a desirable combination of special-order features.
Condition:
Excellent, retains 97% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish, 70% of the original case colors on the hammer and lever (more vibrant on the hammer), and 95% plus of the nitre blue on the loading gate with some scattered light scratches/handling marks, very slight edge wear, and an extremely small patch of light spotting/surface pitting on the left rear of the receiver. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. An exceptionally high condition, special order, deluxe, lightweight.
