Winchester Model 1892 Rifle, Early Antique Production
Description:
This is a nice untouched early Winchester Model 1892 Rifle with most of its original finish. Serial number is in the 36,000 range which is well under the legal antique cut-off at the end of 1898. Comes with one of the oldest Winchester letters I've ever seen back when the records were still at the factory in New Haven, CT. It's typed on Olin Chemical Corporation letterhead (Winchester's Parent Company) signed by T.E. Hall and dated 1961. At that time, the owner of this rifle lived in Stony Brook, New York which is on Long Island; actually just across the Long Island Sound from New Haven, CT where it was built in 1895. Letter verifies the configuration of this rifle by serial number as a 38 caliber rifle with plain trigger and octagon barrel. It shipped from the factory on May 15, 1895.
Configuration is 100% correct with the early 2 line Winchester address 3 line marking on tang with the John Browning Patent date, early front sight with no set screw, original rear sight with short elevator, and a desirable early checkered hammer with the Victorian era dipped border along the top of the knurling. This style hammer was not used for very long before Winchester opted for a plain rectangular border.
Overall, it remains in NRA Antique Fine Plus to Excellent Condition. When we found this rifle, it had a thin layer of what smelled like old pipe tabacco coating the metal which seemed to have protected the original finishes fairly well. The receiver has 80% original blue with the balance toned to a dark brown patina mixed throughout. This rifle doesn't show a great deal of wear. It's mostly edge wear and from being carried on the belly of the receiver. That said, the 80% blue covers more like 90% coverage with brown patina mixing in. The barrel and magazine tube are much the same way...age darkened blue that's around 70% with the balance turned to brown. The case colors on the hammer and lever have also hazed over to brown but you can still see some colors remaining if you look closely. Markings are all excellent. Screws are Fine to Exc. overall. The only blemish on the metal are a few small pits around the oil/bolt pin hole on the right side of the receiver. The original walnut wood fits perfectly and there are no chips, cracks, or repairs. It still has about 70% of its original thinning red varnish remaining on th stock and forend with hand wear along the wrist area. One thing about Winchester varnish on standard production guns is that it was thinner and tended to wear much faster than the finish compared to the thicker varnish on Marlin lever action wood. Wood to metal fit is perfect with swelling just proud of the metal just like it did when it left the factory back in 1895. Winchester left the wood a little high in anticipation that their products could some day end up in much dryer climates where in which their New England Walnut would shrink. The action on this rifle is buttery smooth and the bore is Very Good Plus Overall and still fairly bright. If you're looking for a nice untouched antique Winchester that won't break the bank, this one is attic fresh. Nice combination of condition, age, and character. Comes with the factory letter.
