Description:
This is a very attractive Winchester Model 1885 single shot, made in 1894. It has a special order barrel that is part round - 1/2 octagon and heavier than standard - a no. 2 weight. It is chambered for the 25-20 single shot, or Stevens caliber - Not to be confused with the 25-20 Winchester. The 25-20 S.S shot was popular in this era, Winchester did not like to mark their barrels with another manufactures caliber - hence the " 25-20 wcf", I believe the .25-20 for the Model 1892 lever action came out about a year after this rifle was made. The bore is very good with strong , well defined rifling, there is some some light errosion, a bit more at the breech, but better through the barrel towards the muzzle, it should be a great shooter. The action is strong and positive and functions properly. The receiver still retains some case colors, the blueing on the barrel is turning to a smooth plumbish patina.
I do not believe the engraving is factory, it is not in the letter and I believe was done later, however it is done in a period style and looks quite nice. The gold wedding bands at the muzzle and breech look excellent. The checkering is in the 'H" pattern and is excellent, well done. The sights include a Lyman fold down front with a fine post and an ivory bead. the mid barrel sight is a Lyman fold down no. 6, and it has a Lyman rear tang. The wood is very nice overall, it is flush or proud to the metal. There is an old , solid hair line at the rear tang, hard to see in pics.
Overall this is a very nice, unique Winchester rifle with special order features and tastefully done enhancement.
