RARE Antique NAVY WINCHESTER-HOTCHKISS Bolt Action 1st Model INFANTRY Rifle First Year Production Bolt Action .45-70 GOVT Rifle Made in 1879
Description: RARE Antique NAVY WINCHESTER-HOTCHKISS Bolt Action 1st Model INFANTRY Rifle First Year Production Bolt Action .45-70 GOVT Rifle Made in 1879 Here we present an antique Navy Contract Winchester-Hotchkiss First Model Bolt Action Rifle chambered in .45-70 GOVT, manufactured in its first year of production in 1879 at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. This rifle is one of 1,474 First Model rifles ordered the United States Navy. They all came standard with a 28-3/4 inch barrel rather than the 32-1/4 inch barrels on the Army rifles. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877. This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a magazine fed from the butt stock. It was marketed for military applications as well as a hunting rifle, but it would not see widespread use in the US military. But, this one did. A joint production program was undertaken after the Winchester design passed United States Army Ordnance Department tests in 1878. Springfield Armory assembled rifles from Winchester actions and hardware with barrels and stocks manufactured at the armory. The Army ordered 513 Hotchkiss First Model Rifles for infantry units stationed on the western frontier including Texas and Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory. Springfield subsequently modified 501 of these rifles to carbines for testing by cavalry units. It was a quite modern firearm for the time, a big-bore, bolt action saddle ring carbine. The overall condition is good. This example sports a solid stock through and through. The action is strong with a smooth bolt pull. The bore is bright and reflective with nice rifling. "US/anchor" and "V/P/eagle head" markings are on the barrel. Here is a rare piece from Winchester! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28-1/2 inches. Caliber: .45-70 Government Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $3725 #201101 SOLD Antique: Yes |
