ONE OF THE VERY FIRST, OR PERHAPS THE FIRST 1886 LIGHTWEIGHT TAKEDOWN RIFLE IN .33 WCF, #125XXX. George Madis's books list the introduction date for the .33 WCF at 1903. Some other sources suggest 1902. By the serial number on this one it was made 1901. I called the Cody museum on this one thinking that perhaps the barrel had been changed, but no... it letters as a .33 WCF, round barrel, plain trigger, 1/2 magazine, Shotgun butt with rubber butt plate, takedown, received in the warehouse December 13, 1902 and shipped December 15, 1902. It also said "Serial number application date not available" which leads me to believe the number was applied in 1901, but the receiver not used until sometime late in 1902 for this rifle. Particularly fine condition with about all the blue remaining on the barrel and short magazine tube. It has the correct buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Lyman "Jack" sight (half moon with ivory bead) in the proper base front sight. The receiver shows fine blue on both sides with thinning/silvering on the edges and receiver bottom. The bolt shows fine deep blue. Exc. markings, no proof mark on the receiver or barrel which is correct for pre-1905 rifles. Fine+ butt stock and forend showing only light handling marks with good wood to metal fit. The bottom toe of the butt plate has a small chip that does not go in to the wood. Tight action, solid safety half-cock on the hammer and exc. sharp bore. The .33 WCF was the only cartridge chambered in the 188s originally loaded with smokeless powder and is simply the .45-70 case necked to take standard .338" diameter bullets. This is the lowest number .33 WCF caliber rifle I've ever heard of.
