SCARCE Winchester Model 1886 Takedown (33 WCF Special Order, mfg 1904)
Description: This is a nice, high-condition Winchester Model 1886 Takedown special order rifle in .33 WCF. The standard 1886 rifle was shipped with a half-magazine. The full magazine was a special order item. This rifle has a 24-inch, standard-taper, nickel steel-marked, round barrel. This rifle also features a shotgun butt, with the original rubber buttplate. The barrel and magazine tube retain nearly all of its original blue, with some discoloration present near the muzzle from, what appears to be, blood staining. Minor freckling is present on the receiver, with two spots of discoloration on the loading gate side. All markings are present and very clear. The screw heads are unmolested. Traces of case colors remain mostly in protected areas on the lever, hammer, and trigger. The barrel is fitted with the correct sights: a flat-top buckhorn rear sight and an intact elevator Lyman-marked "jack" front sight (a half moon with an ivory bead) fitted in the correct, raised base. A Lyman peep sight is also fitted on the rear tang. There are no extra holes in the tang under the installed sight. The buttstock and forend are tight and appear to be all-original. The action is tight and the bore is excellent, with no pitting, and it has sharp rifling. The .33 WCF cartridge was the only pure smokeless cartridge made for the Model 1886 and is the .45-70 necked down to .338 caliber. This was one of the most potent calibers of its day. This rifle comes with two boxes of 200 grain ammo loaded by Aardvark Laboratories!
