Synopsis:
This beautifully restored Winchester Model 1892 is a rare pre-WWI takedown rifle chambered in .25-20 WCF, featuring a half-round, half-octagonal 24-inch barrel and deluxe H-style checkered wood stock, graded "X" with crescent buttplate.
Description:
Winchester Model 1892 takedown rifle chambered in .25-20 WCF, half round-half octagonal 24 inch barrel with full magazine tube, fitted with a drift adjustable front sight and elevation adjustable buckhorn rear sight, graded 0-20, the barrel with the standard two-line address and ".25-20 WCF" marked on the top flat, the three-line model/trademark/patent date on the upper tang, and the serial number on the bottom of the receiver. Mounted with a very finely figured, deluxe, H-style checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber grip cap and crescent buttplate. Removing the buttstock shows the left tang marked "19311" followed by the woods grade "X". Reports underscore that only one of every 700 Model 1892s were completed with a pistol grip and only one of 800 such rifles were completed with hand checkered or carved stocks.
Condition:
VG restored condition with the rifle blue showing fading and aging in expected areas, i.e., around the magazine tube and especially under the rear barrel band, under the receiver, and involving the lever. Comparable condition furniture with scattered handling marks, the checkering slightly blunted. Near mirror bore. Correct manual mechanics. A wonderful and now toned restoration of an unusual 1892 Winchester having been made with a number of special order features, the "X" deluxe wood particularly striking!
