Winchester ~ Model of 1917 ~ .30-06 Springfield
Description: This July 1918 right hand bolt action military rifle is a Winchester Model of 1917 chambered in .30-06 Springfield. It has a 26-inch barrel, a protected sides blade fixed front sight, an adjustable military style aperture rear sight, a serrated curved trigger, a steel butt plate with trap door for a cleaning kit [no kit included], a 13½ inch LOP, is 46½ inches in overall length, and it has a 6 round internal magazine. Just behind the front sight is the barrel manufacture's initial [W], a flaming ordnance bomb, and a manufacture date of 6-18. There is also a flaming ordnance bomb proof mark on the left side of the receiver, as well as on the top of the bolt handle. On the left side of the wood stock, above the trigger guard is a "1D" proof mark stamped into the wood. The bayonet block by the muzzle contains a "W" proof mark. The metal parts are in good condition, showing a great patina, but with no apparent corrosion or rust noticeable. The wood is in fairly good condition, showing numerous handling marks and compression marks throughout, but no observable chips or cracks. When the US entered WWI it was desperately short on the older 1903 rifle. Luckily several US companies were finishing up production of British Pattern 14 rifles for the British war effort. It was decided to modify the P-14 design to fire the .30-06 cartridge instead of the .303 British. While the 1903 remained the primary service rifle of the US, production of the Model 1917 far outpaced the 1903; it is estimated that ¾ of the American Forces had Model 1917's by the armistice. .30-06 Springfield SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Metal Condition: "Metal parts are in good condition, showing a great patina, but with no apparent corrosion or rust noticeable Wood Condition: "Wood is in fairly good condition, showing numerous handling marks and compression marks throughout, but no observable chips or cracks Bore Condition: "Bore is mostly bright and shiny with strong observable rifling, and with no noticeable pitting Barrels: 26 inch barrel Triggers: Serrated curved trigger Stock Dimensions: "13½ inch LOP, overall length 46½ inches Fore End: Finger grooved forearm Butt Pad: Steel butt plate with trap door for cleaning kit [no kit included] Weight: 10 LBS 2 OZ Sights: "Protected sides blade fixed front sight, adjustable military style aperture rear sight Item Location: Wichita, KS |
