DELUXE ENGRAVED PRESENTATION 1866 WINCHESTER
Description:
Inscribed in a ribbon on one side of the receiver is “Montgomery Guard” and on the other side is “From a Friend”. The Montgomery Guard was part of California’s state militia and was named for General Wm. Reading Montgomery. Montgomery served in the Civil War and was commissioned to Brigidare General. Hence the California Guard was named Montgomery. It is unknown who the friend was that presented the gun. A beautifully done gone in the 36k serial range. A number of 66’s were engraved in this style in that serial range. The gun features a 24 inch full octagon barrel and full length mag tube. Original sights. Barrel and mag retain 75-80% bright blue starting to tone slightly. Sharp corners and excellent markings. Fancy deluxe wood retaining most original varnish with a VG wrist repair. Many were broken through the wrist. This one has a good looking solid repair. Complete with rifle style butt and original sling swivels. Receiver retains about 25% original gold in protected areas. Where the gold has worn off is a deep butterscotch patina. Good case color on the hammer and lever. A very nice good looking gun! Undoubtedly the work of Conrad Uhlrich.
