Winchester Model 1866 Yellow Boy in 44 Henry
Description: The Winchester Model 1866 “Yellowboy” Third Model Carbine represents a major evolutionary step in lever-action rifle design and is best known for incorporating Nelson King’s patented loading system, commonly referred to as “King’s Improvement.” This innovation added a spring-loaded side loading gate on the right side of the brass receiver, allowing cartridges to be loaded quickly and efficiently without removing the magazine follower or loading from the muzzle, as required on the earlier Henry rifle. King’s design also enclosed the magazine tube, which permitted the addition of a wooden forearm to protect the shooter’s hands from barrel heat during sustained firing, while simultaneously increasing durability by preventing dirt and debris from entering the action. Chambered primarily in .44 Henry Rimfire, the Third Model Carbine offered reliable firepower in a compact, fast-handling configuration well suited for mounted use, frontier defense, and military or paramilitary service. Third Model 1866 Carbines are identifiable by several refined design features introduced as production evolved, including a straighter receiver profile with a reduced “Henry drop,” consistent external serial number stamping on the tang behind the trigger, and updated barrel address markings emphasizing King’s patent rather than Henry’s. Typically configured with a 20-inch round barrel, flip rear sight, saddle ring, and smooth walnut stock and forearm, these carbines were produced roughly within the 25,000 to 149,000 serial number range. While nearly all examples were chambered in .44 Henry Rimfire, a very small number were factory-produced in centerfire for export contracts beginning around 1873, making them especially scarce. As a result of its technical advancements, distinctive brass-frame appearance, and historical significance, the Third Model Winchester 1866 Carbine stands as one of the most important and collectible early repeating firearms of the American frontier era.
