** SOLD ** Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Chambered in .38 WCF .38-40 Caliber ** 1894 Mfg Antique**
Description: Here we have an honest and true 1894 mfg Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle chambered in .38-40 also known as .38 WCF caliber. The Model 1873 was one of the most successful Winchester rifles of its day, with Winchester marketing it as "The Gun that Won the West". Still an icon in the modern day, it was manufactured between 1873 and 1923. It was originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, which was the first centrefire cartridge and which became immensely popular. The 1873 was later produced in .38-40 and .32-20, all of which later became popular handgun cartridges of the day, allowing users to carry just one type of ammunition. This particular 1873 example is chambered in .38-40 caliber. The 24 inch octagon barrel bore has some rifling remaining and a bit of frosting and a little pitting. All metal parts have worn to a very handsome warm patina and exhibit some high edge wear, a few dings and a little pitting of the finish. The stock and forend have earned some character over the years. The forend has a length long crack on the bottom and a chip (wood is missing) on the right side just in front of the receiver. The stock has a crack on the right side just behind the receiver. The stock and forend still have some of their finish while other areas have worn down to the wood. The end of the barrel is bright and worn down to the steel - possibly from going into and out of a scabbard on a horse. Sights are a dovetailed blade front and an elevation adjustable buck horn rear. The butt plate is metal. The action is smooth and locks up nice and tight. If this rifle could talk it would likely tell tales of great adventure. This Winchester would make a great addition to an existing cowboy gun collection or an excellent way to start a new collection.
