1873 Winchester Deluxe Lever Action Carbine Pistol Grip XX Wood Tang Sight .38-40 WCF 1883
Description: Unusual Model 1873 Winchester Deluxe Lever Action Carbine with Mail Order Barrel, Case Hardened Frame, Checkered XX Grade Pistol Grip Stock, Shotgun Butt, & Tang Sight, .38-40 WCF, mfg. 1883. This is a really neat Winchester which was originally special ordered as a Deluxe rifle and converted into a carbine during the first quarter of the 20th century utilizing a Winchester factory mail order 20" barrel with correct carbine sights and barrel bands. The gun was always chambered in .38-40 and matching factory assembly number "910" marked on the lower tang, stock, and buttplate confirm that the gun is an original Deluxe. The lower tang is additionally stamped "XX" indicating the grade of wood used. The frame, lever, trigger, and hammer have turned mostly silver with some very faint whispers of mottled case color visible and stronger traces remaining on the hammer. There are a few small spots of superfine pinprick pitting scattered along the edges of the frame on the left side but overall the surfaces are smooth and edges sharp. The barrel and magazine tube retain 70% bright original bluing thinning along the top while the barrel bands have turned plum. The stock is beautifully figured and features a checkered pistolgrip and forearm with original ebony grip inlay. The forearm is the original which has been configured to carbine style with the correct band fitted in place of the original rifle nosecap. The wood has had a thin coat of varnish added and there are some repaired cracks on the left side of the wrist behind the frame with moderate edge loss along the right upper tang and a thin 1" sliver at the right lower tang. The wood-to-metal fit along the buttplate, forearm, and most of the lower tang remains very good. The very tip of the upper tang and the lower tang just behind the frame show repair work. Crystal clear Winchester barrel address and upper tang model designation with serial number "121117 A" marked on the lower tang. The breech is boldly stamped "38 W.C.F." with Winchester's "WP" proof and the additional "P" proof mark indicating that the barrel was made by Winchester for mail order purchase and installation outside the factory. The mail order proof was introduced in 1912 and the model '73 was discontinued in 1919 with some guns assembled through 1923 so the barrel would have been ordered within this specific time frame. The "38 CAL" inscribed brass carrier is worn yet legible. Original hammer, trigger, lever, lever locking nut, screws, dust cover, post front sight, "1873" marked flip-up ladder rear sight, and adjustable tang sight with peep aperture. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. The carrier remains sharp, the lever snaps shut on it's own, and the dust cover opens and closes securely. Fairly bright bore with strong rifling and moderate fine blackpowder frosting throughout. A rare factory Deluxe Winchester in an attractive and uncommon configuration. While not originally built as a carbine the work was all done in period with correct parts ordered from Winchester. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
