Original Winchester 4 Piece Cleaning Rods Set for Models 1866 and 1873 Rifle, Fine to Exc Condition
Description: This is a really nice set of original Winchester cleaning rods for the Model 1866 and 1873 Rifle with standard 24" barrel which used the 4 jointed rods. The 20" carbines used 3 jointed sections that were slightly longer. This one has the later style brass tip with slightly rounded shoulder which you typically will find throughout the 1880's and into the early 1890's...at which time Winchester discontinued the brass tip and went with one made of steel. These rods came in all 1866 rifles in .44 Henry Flat and all 1873's in 44-40 and 38-40 and were in a compartment in the buttstock via a trapdoor in the buttplate. The 1873's in .22 and 32-20 had bores too small for jointed rods to work so those models according to the Madis book came with a one piece hickory cleaning rod that was almost always lost or discarded. The condition of this set is almost perfect with the still sections still fairly bright and the brass tip aging to a nice patina. There are no cracks in the ferrules and they screw together nicely with no bends...the rod is straight when assembled. There are lots of fakes out there. I've been collecting for 40 years and know the difference. These are originals, not repros and have all the correct dimensions. These would be perfect for an 1880's era 3rd Model 1873 or 4th Model 1866 in high condition. $12.00 shipping.
